The special thing about their Laksa which sets them apart from competitors is the soup base and sambal chili that is prepared with meticulous care.
I liked that the whole bowl was comforting, flavourful, light and not too rich on the coconut milk – balance just right.
Having now tried the authentic Katong laksa, I don’t think I’ll be able to settle for most laksas elsewhere. I was particularly fond of the fact that the noodles are cut short so that I can eat them with a spoon, that just means less stains on my shirt.
The Original Katong Laksa was started by our founder, Mr Ng Juat Swee, popularly known as Janggut (beard in Malay). Back in the 40s', he was selling his laksa carrying his pole with metal buckets over his shoulders around the Marine Parade beach area.
In the early 50s' with his younger brother Mr Ng Chwee Seng, they sold laksa on a tricycle around the streets where they lived at Marshall Road and in front of the bungalow by Marine Parade beach. Our first stall was born in the late 50s' at 49 East Coast Road which was well known as Katong Laksa for its location.
